Great Moments
From the first garage sale to the first sale of a weed wacker, this is Burbia's celebration of the greatest moments in suburban history. Contribute, and help us ensure that no defining moments go unnoted. 1933 1st Drive-In Theater Opened In Camden, NJ. Popularized making out among teens (and adults without sofas) and insured that Hollywood's worst movies would receive regular distribution in out-of-the-way weed infested fields throughout suburbia for nearly half a century. 1979 TV Series Knots Landing Premieres Set around a picturesque cul-de-sac, visionary hit primetime soap opera depicts suburbia as a tree-lined wonderland whose residents amuse themselves primarily by having sex, stealing from each other, and trying to kill themselves and their neighbors. 1992 U.S. Lawn Mower Racing Association Founded Visionary. Pathbreaking. These athletes race around dirt fields in their tractor mowers living the dream -- that one day their proud organization moniker (USLMRA) will be linked with that of their heroes (NASCAR), and not the more commonly heard and decidedly less lofty, IDIOTS. 1963 Invention of the Lava Lamp By Edward Craven Walker. Single-handledly set off the sex-crazed, drug-hazed rock & roll 60s generation, making the lava lamp the essential home interior decoration, aphrodisiac and spouse swapping suburban key party bedroom lighting device. 1903 Adirondack Chair Created One of the first and inexplicably most popular porch chairs in America. Reflecting values of natural country living and sitting...on largely unsmooth, splinter-producing, hard-as-rock bolted together pieces of trees formed in the rough shape of an electric chair.
