Kent Couch
Lawn Chair Aviation Pioneer

Finally someone who recognized the true calling of lawn chairs -- space flight. It happened July 4 weekend a year ago in Bend, Oregon, when Kent Couch fulfilled a life long dream: Traveling through the sky on his favorite lawn chair from Oregon to Idaho, 200-plus miles of uninterrupted reclining bliss.

Couch never gave up on his dream -- even after having failed twice before in his interstate flight attempts. And who knew flying could be so simple. Just attach a bunch of helium party balloons to your chair -- the same kind you might use at your kid's birthday party; in fact why not use the actual balloons from your kid's party...why waste them on kids who are only going to pop them? Then, strap in, recline to a comfortable position, and fly away.

Mr. Couch (never has a name been more appropriate to its owner's avocation) landed safely in Idaho to a rousing crowd of several farmers and their livestock.

What's next for the lawnchair hero? He's non-commital. But may we suggest interstate lawn tractor flight? Yes, it might take a few more balloons (lawn tractors are beasts--like Volvos without winter traction control) and the instructions usually advise against operating the mowers in bad weather (though they say nothing about high altitude or wind sheer)...But no one has ever flown a lawn tractor across state lines before and, if the flight is completed safely, there's no telling how many opportunities will be available to mow the Idaho farmers' fields, make a little extra cash, before strapping back in and flying home. ...Learn about more heroes.
