- added on 11/11/2008 And Now, America's Worst "Best Towns" Everyone loves a "best towns" story, but what's truly hilarious about Businessweek's second annual round-up of the Best Places in America to Raise Kids, is the rapidly-growing list of outraged comments from readers who can't believe how wrong the article got it. Receiving particular vitriol is the magazine's choice of Lawton, OK, as one of America's "best affordable towns." A typical response: "Lawton? Good grief! I've lived in Oklahoma for 45+ years and would consider camping under an overpass with my kids before subjecting them to life in Lawton!"
To make the choices of one "best affordable town" per state, the magazine eliminated towns with populations of fewer than 50,000 and median household incomes of less than $40,000 or more than $100,000. They looked at factors like school performance, safety, cost of living, air quality, racial diversity and local parks and recreation centers.
Readers also balked at the choices of Omaha ("Omaha? Here in Nebraska we say it's the worst city in the state!") and Pawtucket, RI. ("Are u kidding me? I'm afraid to drive through Pawtucket!) among many others. And the comments, at last check numbering more than 1,000, are still pouring in. Want to know if your town was chosen and how many people think that choice was, well, insane? Read the article and the comments.
